How to Mount a Display Rack

time2011/10/10

The specifics of mounting a display rack vary widely depending on the style of the display rack and its included mounting hardware, if any. However, with any wide span rack, the most important step is locating a wall stud to attach it to, giving the display the amount of support it needs to hang safely. Most walls are made from drywall, a relatively weak substance that will not hold screws or nails very well if pressure is put on them. Studs are usually made from wood, so they are able to grip the screws or nails you use to mount your display rack and hold them securely.
Instructions
Turn on your electronic stud finder and place it against the wall near the spot where you want to hang your display rack. Move it in one direction slowly until it indicates you have found a stud, which it may do with an indicator light or noise, depending on the model.
Mark where the stud is with colored chalk. Move the stud finder slowly to the right or left, depending on which direction you want the rack to hang, until it indicates the next stud. Studs are generally 16 inches apart, but may be 24 inches or slightly less or more than one of these standard measurements.
Install the mounting hardware that came with your rack at the desired height at the first stud according to the directions on the packaging. It may require a hammer, drill or screwdriver. Use screws that are at least 1-1/2 inches long and rated for the weight of your display rack if no hardware came with your rack. The weight of the rack should be noted on the wide span rack. Drive the screws in with a handheld or powered driver.
Hold the next set of mounting hardware up against the second stud. Set a bubble level across the top of both sets of hardware. Set a compact bubble level on top of a straight piece of wood that will span between the studs if you do not have the long style of bubble level. Adjust the second set of hardware up or down until it is level with the first, then attach it the same as the first set.
Attach your display rack to both sets of mounting hardware as noted in the rack's instructions. Undo the screws enough to mount your wide span rack if you installed with simple screws. Tighten the screws once your rack is in place.
